Interview Spotlight: Petty Kunzwa

This interview spotlight is for all women who are seeking to inspire and motivate other women to pursue their passion. We want to hear real stories from people we can relate to and learn from. Hope you will be inspired, encouraged and motivated by what they will be sharing. This week we caught up with Petty Kunzwa.

Hie Petty, Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m a 22 year old medical student, currently studying in Kaunas, Lithuania. I am also very creative and I have a YouTube Lifestyle channel where I aim to inspire young women to develop themselves and become the best versions of themselves. I am also a fitness fanatic!

How did you come to know Jesus Christ and can you briefly share your Christian Journey with us?

I was born into a fairly liberal christian home and I grew up knowing who God was but never fully understanding who he was to me personally. As I said my family is pretty liberal about religion so my parents basically let us choose our own paths after a certain age. During my early teenage years, I definitely didn’t practice my faith and I got lost along the way and made some really bad choices. When I was 17 I had a personal encounter with Jesus and he changed my life! Since then I gave my life to him and I have been living for him ever since.

What is your significant life bible verse?

Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” If I could describe my life in one sentence it would say exactly this, It’s just so fitting on how I view God and his role in my life.

Can you share some key lessons that God has taught you or that God is teaching you in this season of your life?

To live a simple life. Nowadays that is called ‘minimalism’. I never thought I would ever describe myself as a minimalist. I’m not quite there yet but God has been teaching me that we don’t need ‘things’ in this life. If you have money it should be to advance the Gospel work, not buy the latest fashion. If you have influence it should be to tell people about their saviour, not use it for your own benefit. It’s taken a very long time for me to learn this because I have definitely been in the mindset of building an empire for this life but even the bible says “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:2) “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare” (2 Peter 3:13) My focus has shifted to using all I have to advance the gospel, to focus on heavenly things and all these other things will be added unto me. And in a busy world like the one we live, it’s nice to live a simple life.

What is your life work or passion?

My greatest passion is to help people realise their worth especially women, young women. I thank God for revealing this to me at an earlier age that we are valued, we are loved, we are worth the very life of God. If more women realised this, they would be living different lives and making different decisions. That is my passion, that is why I created my YouTube channel, I want to inspire women to have Godfidence!

What is a day in your life look like/Can you give us a glimpse into your daily life?

My days are very different from one to another I don’t particularly have a set routine because of studying, making youtube videos and travelling it varies. On an average day though, I wake up and first thing I do is pray and thank God for giving me life. Then I will do my morning devotion and spend time with God and my day is ready to start. If I have classes that day then I’m off to uni for pretty much the whole day. If not I usually film or edit YouTube videos. I also do some jobs for clients online so I get to work with that and that will take up most of my day. I’m big on social media influence and content creating so I’m always updating all my social media, it’s a job in itself! When it comes to my work I don’t really ever shut off, so I can work all day and night on videos etc. Otherwise My evening is the time to wind down, catch up on some series and speak to my boyfriend. And that’s usually how my day goes.

What do you do spiritually and practically to maintain a Christ-centred approach in your work as a youtuber?

I love this question because it is something I’ve really learnt along the way and I’m still learning. I can never really separate my faith from who I am because my faith IS who I am. So I think naturally that comes across in my content. However sometimes I have to be very intentional about how I present myself on YouTube so that it doesn’t clash with what I profess to believe, whether it’s how I dress, what I say or how I act. I pray A LOT about my content and its purpose. And I’m also lucky enough to have a boyfriend who always holds me accountable to keeping Christ as the centre and will call me out if something is not lining up. So I would say being intentional, prayer and accountability.

What advice would you give to a young woman who desires to go deeper in her relationship with Jesus Christ?

Desire is all you need and God will do the rest, if you continue to seek him daily. If you are transitioning into a deeper relationship with God, know that it might not be easy. Luke 5:36-39 talks about how no one is going to put a new piece of cloth onto an old one incase the old tears the new, or putting new wine into old bottles, incase the bottle breaks and the wine is lost. So instead you put new wine into new bottles and both are preserved. He then ends by saying no one having drank old wine straight away desires the new wine because he will always say the old one is better. The lesson here is when you get to know Jesus he desires to change you completely and make you new. He doesn’t want to change you on the outside and the inside is not new because the two will not agree. You can’t patch up bad habits with new good habits, you have to get rid of the old completely. So If you desire to get to know Jesus deeper, prepare for change, prepare for reformation, and prepare to maybe not like it at first because your old life might seem better. But Jesus knows your needs and he sees your desire and he also wants to come into your heart and dwell with you. Practically the advice I would give is to spend as much time with God as possible. That can be through your daily devotional time, prayer time or meditating on the word. Pick a book in the Bible and study it to find out more about God in that book and what he is saying to you now. Make a prayer list and pray for those things daily. Have people around you that will also encourage you in this journey you are about to take!

What advice would you give to other young women who have the desire to start a youtube channel or to pursue a medical degree?

First you need to ask WHY? If your reason is good/strong enough then you will start a channel or pursue medicine and you won’t stop or give up. Then you need to do what’s necessary in order for you to actually achieve your desires. Get a camera, think of video ideas etc or get yourself work experience, research into what it takes to be a doctor and be well educated in the area you are about to go into. Neither of those paths are easy so you really need to be determined and driven. And lastly DON’T BE SCARED! I promise, you’ve got this! What’s the worst that could happen? Just give it a go.

Who inspires you and why?

I don’t have one person in particular but people achieving their dreams in general. I love seeing people hustle and have a success story, it motivates me so much. I guess my parents are my perfect example, they literally started from NOTHING! I remember growing up in Zimbabwe people would literally laugh at my family because we were so poor and struggled so much. But my parents have built their lives into something quite remarkable. The same people that laughed, now they are employed by my parents and they sustain so many families financially. So seeing that growing up, I LOVE success stories, I love seeing people work hard and achieve their dreams. There’s is nothing that inspires me more.

What are some of your favourite things?

Waking up without an alarm clock. Eating a really good satisfying meal! Exercising 🙂 Doing my hair and makeup – it’s so therapeutic to me, sometimes I just do my hair and makeup and I don’t even leave the house. It’s just one of my favourite things.

What advice would you give your younger self?

It’s all going to work out. Don’t stress too much love.

Do you have any books or sermons that you recommend young women to read or listen to?

Friend of God sermon series by David Asscherick is pretty amazing.

Also books I will list a few.

Pink Lips and Empty Hearts by Heather Lindsey;

I kissed dating goodbye – Joshua Harris;

How to win friends and Influence People – Dale Carnegie

How can other women reach you or where can they find you online?

My Youtube channel is Nellahgrace.
